Paddling the Upper Gorge: A Journey Through q̓əmasəŋ

Nestled in the heart of Victoria, the upper Gorge Waterway offers paddlers a peaceful and culturally rich experience unlike any other. Known traditionally by the Songhees people as q̓əmasəŋ (pronounced Kwam-ma-seng), this area is steeped in both natural beauty and deep history.

🐦 A Sanctuary on the Water

Paddling the Gorge isn’t just a way to connect with nature—it’s also an opportunity to witness one of British Columbia’s ecological treasures. The Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club (VCKC) sits within the Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary, offering front-row access to a spectacular array of bird species.

Throughout the year, and especially during migration seasons, the inlet becomes a resting ground for ducks, geese, and other waterfowl. As stewards of this beautiful environment, we kindly ask paddlers to avoid rafts of birds—disturbing them causes unnecessary stress and energy loss on their long journeys.

🚫 Respecting Sensitive Areas

It’s also important to note that paddling in the Colquitz Creek area is off-limits year-round. The channel is too narrow and shallow, and paddling there can cause harm to the shoreline and to the delicate biofilm on the bottom, which plays a vital role in the aquatic ecosystem.

🌱 Life Above and Below

Thanks to local conservation efforts, the Gorge is seeing a steady return of healthy plant life and aquatic animals. Community-led clean-up initiatives have made a real difference—what was once a littered waterway now teems with renewed vitality.

A stop at the Gorge Nature House is a must for curious minds. It’s home to a touch pool filled with fascinating local marine life, as well as displays and programs that help visitors of all ages learn more about the region's ecosystems.

🏞 Trails, History & Rebirth

The restoration work done at Cuthbert Holmes Park, especially during the McKenzie interchange construction, has been transformational. The upgraded riparian zones now provide a lush and accessible green space, perfect for a walk before or after your paddle.

For those interested in the deeper stories of the land, the area near the Tillicum Narrows holds a sacred place in Lekwungen oral tradition. The legend of Camossung, a young girl turned to stone by a powerful spirit, reflects the deep spiritual significance of the Gorge to the local First Nations. You can read more about this powerful story on the Camosun College website, as well as in this article on the history of Tillicum Narrows.

🛶 Paddle With Purpose

When you paddle the upper Gorge, you’re not just exploring a beautiful waterway—you’re entering a living story of nature, culture, and community care. Paddle gently, observe closely, and honor the privilege of being part of this unique and precious place.
